Evaluation

When I received this project brief I was excited, I really enjoyed the research part of the brief, I also liked the idea of creating my own images based on the seven deadly sins. I liked looking into different artists and designers because their work really influenced me in my own work especially the work of Illustrator Craig Shields - If I hadn’t of looked at his work I probably wouldn’t of had one of the final images of my own work and the style it was.

The images I had to create had to be based on original source material which I found at first, a little hard, but as I started to take pictures around my house and various places, I started to come up with ideas that I could potentially develop further.

I also looked into the seven sins a little bit more because I had to pick three out of them, I did mind maps and various idea-generating techniques into some of the deadly sins to research further. To improve on this part of the project I could of used more techniques for more of the sins to get a wide range information.

Google was my main source of research, as well as looking at artists who had done pieces of work representing the sins. At first  I started to experiment with a few techniques in photoshop that I had noticed other artists had done in their own work and how it could be incorporated into my own.

My three sins that I eventually chose were; Pride, Wrath & Greed. For pride I already knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to use the same kind of styles that I had seen in my artist research, I started to play about in Photoshop with the glow effects and various other tools until I got where I thought was a complete piece. I think my pride image was the best out of all three, probably because of how influenced I was by my artists that I had chosen.

For Wrath I experimented with various photoshop brushes, I had seen a previous image created by a student that represented Lust and I wanted to try the same technique - Slightly different on my own work for the sin Wrath, but I didn’t feel that it worked as well as I thought. I tried a few various styles for the sin Wrath until I finally knew which Idea I was going to go with.

I think for this project I did alot of research into artists and I found it really benefited me when I was coming up with my own ideas for my work. What I was looking for was images that looked contemporary but still had that digital effect. I even created some A3 sheets using paints, inks and pens etc to try to work with my own images, And I used two of them faded into my final pieces at the end of this.

I feel I learnt a few skills in Photoshop from this project, I learnt a lot more tools on creating effects on images that I didn’t really understand before, I feel more confident using these techniques for future pieces of my work. I used various brushes on my pieces and also the eraser tool to create effects how I wanted.

I have enjoyed this project, I enjoyed using Photoshop as this is what I use mainly anyways, I feel I have produced some nice pieces of work which possibly I couldn’t of done before without understanding the tools more. I have learnt about new artists that I won’t forget anytime soon such as Craig Shields, David Waters & Jonathan Foerster. I think I will try to use their style of work in my own work again sometime.

Pride - this is the final image for the sin Pride I did in Photoshop. I used a tutorial to get the glows around the body in the center, I liked how it turned out and I probably wouldn’t of done this if I hadn’t searched any of my artists works. I really liked how most of them used the glows in their works. I think in the future I could use this technique in my work again since  I really liked it this time.

Anger - This is the final image for one of the three sins I had to do which was Wrath. I had to use a traditional method in my work so I created a painted background using pens and paints and faded it in the background on this image. I liked how this turned out because of the tools that I used in photoshop. The smudge tool really came in handy to create this image how it was. I think this would be a really good tool to remember for the future if i ever needed to do something like this again.

Greed - This is the final image for the sin Greed, for this image I used the images that I had taken from home and around college. I used the picture of money that  I took and faded it into the room so it looked like the wall paper, I also did this for the floor and warped the same image which I duplicated to look like a pile on the table.
I had to take a separate picture of the person to place in the picture to represent the Sin a bit more. I like how this image turned out because it doesn’t really look out of place and I like the effect I put on this image. I tried numerous filters on photoshop to get the right look that I was going.

These are some of the mock ideas  I played around with on Photoshop before I made my final ideas. I like some of them like the first one because I really liked the graphicy background. I got this from my research as I wanted to make my background more graphic-like. For the second one I placed another image that I created with paint and pens. Although I really liked this image, it didn’t work very well together and didn’t really shown the sin well.

He has done work for companies such as Adidas Atari Water bottle companies etc.

I like how hes done some of the images in photoshop using the different effects such as the glows around the objects. I think I want to use this kind of effect in my own work if I get the chance. I have done some tutorials on how to get this glow effects around images and objects and it looked really nice so if I could incorporate that into my own work I would be happy.

Joan Charmant - Software Designer Located in Bordeaux, South-west of France. He has no academic background in art. But has been involved in Graphic Arts before, he started image manipulation in 2004 due to stumbling across UFO pictures and he wanted to see how hard it would have been to fake them.

His inspiration is mainly from sci-fi short stories and novels. He has a huge book collection and is fascinated by alot of things such as nature, technology, science, culture differences. He trys to mix contrasting ideas and feelings in his works.

“The consequence is that when I design an image, I will often make connections between remote concepts and come up with (hopefully) something fresh or bizarre.”

Craig Shields - He is 22 years old and Lives in the UK in York. He studies graphic design at university. He comes from a family of artists. He has always had an interest in art. It wasn’t until he got the internet that he discovered Depthcore - which is a digital art & media collective, that he found digital art. This website is one of his major inspirations in creating his own work. One of the pieces that I have chosen as an example was created for a desktop background for a computer.

Some of his works are created for the website Depthcore which they all have individual meanings to them.  Below is what he responded to in an interview creating “Hocus Pocus”

You created for Depthcores latest pack entitled “Her”. Explain to us what lies within all this beautiful chaos. And please walk us through the process of creating this illustration.

Thank you! The concept revolves around love at first sight. The man can’t explain why he feels the way he does about her. He just does. Its magical, surreal. Almost like she’s placed a spell on him.

I started off with the models face. She’s beautiful but I wanted to add a creepy twist to it. Adding textures and painting little details on to her gave her this look. The hands were added next. They were positioned to give the impression that a spell was being made. A combination of dark and grungy textures made the background, and various other paint textures to create a sort of spider-web pattern around her head.

Vibrant green marks were made with my Wacom to represent your typical spell and also inject some much needed color into the image. Finally, some foreground shapes were blurred to give a sense of movement and depth.’

This work has inspired me to create me own piece of work. I like the work with the glows around the images and the brightness of each piece. I think this has inspired me to create my own for the sin Pride.

This is one of my ideas for Wrath which is one of the sins I am doing. It shows the original photograph taken and then cropped in Photoshop. I then used the smudge tool which is a tool in Photoshop to smudge the image. I used this process as an experiment in Photoshop to try out different techniques. I think using this technique has helped convey the metaphor of Anger/Wrath as it shows the emotion behind the image.
